Application Manual

The application consists of the following documents/information:

1. Application Form (online application form)
Please fill out the applicable fields in the application form. The application form contains personal and academic information in tabular form.

2. Letter of Motivation (upload as pdf-file or jpeg image)
Please express your intention to study at RGS Econ in a separate letter of motivation. Be specific about your previous studies and your wish to study at RGS Econ, as well as your fields of interest, your expectations, and your long-term professional goals. Your statement should not exceed one page. Please upload the letter of motivation to the application system. You may address this letter to Professor Dr. Ludger Linnemann (see below).

3. Curriculum Vitae (upload as pdf-file or jpeg image)
You may additionally upload your individual curriculum vitae (recommended but not mandatory, as this information is supplied under 1.).

4. Two Letters of Recommendation (download as doc or pdf-file, emailed to us by the referees)
We require two confidential letters of recommendation from university professors who are familiar with your previous academic work and who can judge your potential as a PhD-student. These are an essential part of your application. Any other kind of recommendation is not sufficient.

It is your responsibility to contact your referees, provide them with the recommendation form you can download below, and to ensure that they submit the letters to us before the application deadline. Applicants can check whether or not the recommedations have been submitted via the application system.

5. Certificates and Grade Reports (upload as pdf-file or jpeg image)
We require scans of your certificates concerning your high school graduation and university education. Please upload relevant graduate and undergraduate transcripts detailing your academic background and accomplishments (e.g. M.Sc./Diploma certificate, marks obtained). If a final M.Sc./Diploma certificate has not been issued yet, you may upload provisional transcripts, mark sheets, or any other documents showing academic accomplishments. In your letter of motivation, indicate the expected date of issue of the final document.

In particular, we requires the following documents:

  1. Copy of your certificate of secondary education (High School Diploma, "Abiturzeugnis" for those who possess a German Abitur) .
  2. Copies of your university degrees, including grade reports / transcripts (i.e. Bachelor's and Master's degree, German "Diplom").
  3. If you have not finished your university degree but will have completed it prior to the start of the program on October 1st, please enclose an up-to-date official preliminary grade report / transcript.

We accept scans of your certificates and degrees as well as scans of your official translations. We accept certificates and translations in German and English. If your application has been successful, you must show all original or certified documents prior to registration.

6. Scans of professional certificates (upload as pdf-file or jpeg image)
Applicants with relevant working experience can add scans of professional certificates (employer's references etc.) here.

7. Proof of English Proficiency (upload scan of result as pdf-file or jpeg image)
Proof of English Proficiency such as the "Test of English as a Foreign Language" (TOEFL) or "International English Language Testing System" (IELTS) is highly recommended for all applicants except those who

  1. are native English speakers or
  2. can prove at least six months of studies at an English-speaking university or
  3. possess a German "Abitur".

8. GRE Test Score or GMAT (upload scan of result as pdf-file or jpeg image)
For applicants without a German "Abitur", a GRE test score (General Test Format) or a GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is highly recommended.


Note 1: It is your responsibility to ensure that all documents are submitted, uploaded and/or received by the application deadline. Incomplete applications or CV-based standard applications will NOT be considered.

Note 2: Please do not leave your application-session unattended. After 30 minutes of inactivity, your session will be disconnected and it will be necessary for you to log in again.
